That's just it, Cheryl. Precisely. As, educators, we're missing out on an important opportunity if our students think of new media tools as "for fun" and not "for learning". Hope you enjoy your summer too!

Hi again Robin!
It is very true that our students are quite "literate" when it comes to using technology for their own purposes, but when it comes to using it in an academic setting there are serious gaps like you mention. We are seeing that in our students and I have discussed this with other colleagues in grad classes. They see the disconnect in their students regardless of how "tech-savvy" the students are. I hope the course at our school addresses many of the issues and questions you bring up. Enjoy your summer.

HI Cheryl!
Good to see you here :-) You know, I'm not so sure if buy into this digital native/digital immigrant thing. Absolutely, our students are much more adept at learning about these new tools and they're quick to use them for their own personal stuff (music, facebook with friends, IMing etc) but most of the high school students I've worked with have some serious gaps in their understanding of the web and how these tools work. For instance, they don't understand about about rights and permissions, what the creative commons is, how to build a wiki, or how to think in terms of their own future digital footprint. I think they need help with these skills and behaviors from their teachers. How interesting that your school has a 21st century skills course (your school is innovative in SO many ways!). I hope that the teachin/learning that's started in that course with your 9th graders, continues up through the curriculum so that they see all of their teachers modeling responsible, creative, and productive use of the web in all of their courses.

I think that you are "right on" with your assessment of "21st Century Skills". It is an extremely broad concept. Your list encompasses many of the things I learned in grad classes on this topic. We have to remember that most of our students are digital natives, whereas we are most likely digital immigrants. This means that many of the technology skills we (educators) must learn come naturally to our students. In fact, all of our 9th grade students must take a 21st Century Skills class and the focus is definitely on responsible use of Internet skills, but also communication skills, inquiry, and higher order thinking skills.
